Dealing with Impossible People at Work

You hear news of harassment cases at work, but unlike widely publicized cases, many others fall under the radar. This reluctance may be because the situation may be hard to identify. The obvious kind, quid pro quo, is when a boss threatens to fire or demote you if you don’t submit to what he or she wants (even if it’s against company policy). The second type, hostile work environment, is more nebulous. The latter is also the more common type.

So how do you set these offenders straight? Telling human resources immediately may be more trouble than it’s worth if the behavior is immature rather than intimidating. So, if you just merely wish to be left alone, fire back with a comment that conveys you want to stop the behavior.

If that person still doesn’t quit, be more direct. You may want to tell your supervisor if your efforts have fallen on deaf ears. People around you will definitely be interviewed if the whole thing blows up. Just be ready to face up to your statement and be brave about it.

Stop Sign med Dealing with Impossible People at WorkEven if that person had a high position, you still need to say something to indicate that the behavior is unwelcome. For serious cases such as harassment and blackmail, not even a CEO of a company should get away with it. Your actions may cause intrigue, but this is also for the good of the other people in the company. You’re simply calling the attention of those who aren’t brave enough, and whatever may happen in the future, this incident will always be on record.

When situations like these happen at work, it’s difficult to become productive. Instead of looking forward to the day ahead, you dread stepping into that office building. Maybe it’s time for a change.

Nonetheless, you shouldn’t take things like a doormat. You have to find a way to let all your frustrations out in a healthy manner. Everyone will have to deal with difficulty in their life, and your time may be now. Of course, it’s harder when your career is on the line. As long as you remain professional about it and go through the proper channels, they can never charge you with anything. Basically, don’t overreact and blow things out of proportion.

It’s time to reevaluate things and make some adjustments. If you have to step it up a notch and become a more assertive person, then so be it. Granted that you remain civilized about it no matter how tempting it is to just go up to the person and beat him or her up. Moreover, don’t go crying to the higher-ups immediately. You’re an adult, and while things can be handled more quietly, try to take care of the situation by yourself at first. It’s only when policies and laws are broken can you finally take drastic measures.

Your future is on the line and you must do everything within your power to make your job as secure as possible. Otherwise, there are also greener pastures elsewhere. Don’t lose hope and stand your ground.

At one time I was on the board of directors of an organisation which was set up just to support and advise people who were caught up in this position in the workplace. If you want to contact me to get personal help go to my contact me page and let me know the details for a personal response.

The Fear of Failing

Why is it that people see mistakes as being a death sentence? There’s a looming fear of doom when they know that they might do something wrong. But then again, everyone has been guilty of committing more than a few mistakes, and on several occasions at that. Ronald Thomson The Fear of Failing

It is man’s nature to fear what they don’t know. This is what usually holds them back from doing anything remotely interesting and different. Usually, though, this only takes the backseat to an even bigger fear, and that is failure! Sure you want to discover something so innovative that you leave people in awe and impressed by your abilities, but you also continually ask yourself ‘what if,’ and that stops you immediately in your tracks.

Life is a gamble, and every so often, you need to take fate by the hand and lead it to a future you want. That takes a lot of guts. You may not always know where you’re headed, but sometimes, that’s the best part. When you surprise yourself, you feel pride. You become a more confident individual because you know you’ve conquered the unknown. Sadly, many simply settle for mediocrity because they don’t want to be humiliated.

You should never accept defeat. You may not be born with certain skills, but there is also a lot that you can learn from the world. You should keep in mind that while negative thoughts create gloom, the energy radiated by having a positive attitude is reflected in your actions.

The same belief applies to your professional life. Some of you go to work, do your job, and basically do everything in routine. You don’t venture into anything else because it’s what you are most familiar with. You have other dreams but keep them in the back burner because you don’t know if you’re equipped for it. If you do decide to get into your dreams and do what you are most passionate about, you may sometimes feel that you aren’t good enough. Your life goes to waste with this sort of attitude, and you definitely need to pursue what you love most in life for a shot at happiness.

If you have a fear of failure, know that this is not unique to only you. People naturally steer clear from things that lead to failure. However, it is important to note that this fear can do more than keep you from being successful. It holds you back from living the kind of life you so deserve. Because of past failures, you know how it felt when people ridiculed you.

On the contrary, you’re more than good enough. Work on self esteem and realize that life is all about experimenting. If you fail, then maybe you need to take a look at the process and see what went wrong. Every good scientist knows that they have to come up with several sets of hypothesis before they get to the solution.

Be willing to test out every theory. The road to success is ridden with bumps, and it is only in trying will you realize which ones should be avoided. People who keep trying despite their hundreds of failures will triumph a lot sooner than those who don’t try at all. Just take baby steps!
